Battleship Online brings the classic naval combat board game to your browser in full 3D, with no download, no install, and no sign-up required. Deploy your fleet across a 10Γ10 grid, then take turns calling out coordinates to locate and sink your opponent's ships before they sink yours. Play a quick round against our AI commander or settle the score with a friend in local hot-seat multiplayer.
Whether you grew up playing Battleship with pen, paper, and pegboards, or you're discovering this timeless strategy game for the first time, this free browser version delivers smooth animations, atmospheric sound design, and an AI opponent that adapts to the difficulty you choose.
How to Play Battleship
- Deploy your fleet. Place five ships β a Carrier (5 squares), Battleship (4 squares), Cruiser (3 squares), Submarine (3 squares), and Destroyer (2 squares) β anywhere on your 10Γ10 grid, horizontally or vertically.
- Take turns firing. Click a square on the enemy grid to fire. A hit lights up red; a miss shows as a splash marker.
- Track the fleet. Use the fleet tracker under each board to see which enemy ships are still afloat and which have been sunk.
- Sink the fleet to win. The first player to destroy every ship in the opposing fleet wins the match.
Choose Your Difficulty
π’ Easy
The AI fires at random coordinates with no memory of past hits. Great for beginners or a relaxed, low-pressure game.
π‘ Medium
The AI hunts using a checkerboard search pattern, then switches to directional targeting once it lands a hit β a fair, classic challenge.
π΄ Hard
The AI builds a live probability map of your most likely ship positions and targets aggressively around confirmed hits. Only for confident admirals.
Battleship Strategy Tips
- Spread your ships out. Avoid clustering your fleet in one corner β it makes it easier for a sharp opponent to guess nearby positions after a hit.
- Fire in a checkerboard pattern. Since every ship is at least 2 squares long, targeting every other square guarantees you'll eventually clip every ship on the board.
- Follow up on hits immediately. Once you land a hit, fire at the four adjacent squares to determine the ship's orientation before finishing it off.
- Don't ignore small ships. The 2-square Destroyer is easy to miss β keep systematically covering the whole grid, not just areas near previous hits.
- Mix up your placement each game. Predictable fleet layouts (like always hugging the edges) become easy to counter over repeated games.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you play Battleship?
Each player secretly places a fleet of ships on a 10Γ10 grid, then takes turns calling out coordinates to fire at the opponent's grid. A hit is recorded when a ship occupies that square; a miss when it doesn't. The first player to sink every ship in the enemy fleet wins.
Is this Battleship game free to play?
Yes β Battleship Online is completely free, playable directly in your browser with no downloads, installs, or account required.

The AI offers three difficulty levels: Easy fires randomly, Medium hunts with a checkerboard pattern and directional follow-up, and Hard calculates a probability density map for highly accurate targeting.
